About a year ago, I met a lady at a festival who wanted a special gift for her husband, a fire-fighter helicopter pilot. After several conversations, we finally pieced together the perfect surprise for him - a custom tic-tac-toe board featuring one of his helicopters and an American flag, and matching coasters. They have a game room/bar full of American flag and helicopter art so this was the perfect fit!
There were a couple of little elements I added in as a little extra surprise - the tic-tac-toe X pieces are the blades for his helicopters (2 short, 2 long), and the O's are the emblem on the door.
This was a challenging and time-consuming piece but the stars....OH THE STARS.....I swore I'd never do a flag again just so I'd never have to do a billion tiny stars again (but I'm pretty sure I'll be doing another one soon... I'm a glutton for punishment). I filled in the stripes using my favorite technique stippling, which is basically lots of little dots. The smoke curls are so good with this technique!
All in all, the client was thrilled when she received it and I got the sweetest report back:
Hello Liz,
I wanted to let you know my husband LOVED his tic-tac-toe board and coasters! He loved every special detail. And it was perfect addition to the game/bar room. Especially because my sister and family had special corn hole boards made for the game room patio, so it was a helicopter Christmas for him!!
