Spring Has Sprung - Cherry Blossom Tree

Many years ago, my husband Jonathon was in the Marine Corps and we were stationed near Washington DC. They have a famous festival each spring - the Cherry Blossom Festival - and it's incredible. I've never gotten to attend the actual festival but seeing the cherry blossom trees in full bloom in and around DC each year were absolutely breathtaking. Queue inspiration...

When I saw this piece of wood, I knew I wanted to do a detailed, dramatic piece with a lot of color and a tiny bit of epoxy resin to fill in the small knot.

After I finished the burn, I wasn't really happy with it - it was a tree for sure, but didn't scream "cherry blossoms". I typically use watercolors or watercolor pencils but this one needed some depth and texture. The different shades of pink acrylic layered on top of the burn was exactly what it needed. It may look great but this piece is all about the texture that's hard to capture with a camera - you really need to run your hand over this one to get the full effect!

I'm a little disappointed that the pink metallic epoxy doesn't show through well, but lesson learned for the next project. Also...peep Jolene racing around in the background!
